Biography of Alonzo Beal
Alonzo Beal, born on November 20, 1862, in Ohio, emerged from humble beginnings to become one of Shawnee County’s prominent landowners and cattlemen. After the death of his father, he helped support his family, moving to Iowa for better wages before settling in Kansas. His diverse experiences included farming, ranching, and clerking. Beal ultimately accumulated significant land holdings, including 1,280 acres, and became involved in local politics and civic organizations. He married twice, with his second wife being the daughter of a notable Kansas cattleman.
Biography of James Harvey Stewart
James Harvey Stewart, born on October 9, 1854, in Ohio, became a prominent figure in Wichita, Kansas, after moving from Iowa. A lawyer by profession, he served as a state senator and held influential roles in local businesses and civic organizations, including vice president of the National Bank of Commerce. Spencer, Jesse W. – Obituary
Jesse W. Spencer, a veteran conductor and brakeman for the Union Pacific railroad, passed away at 53 following a heart attack after an appendicitis operation. Born on July 5, 1887, in Lucas, IA, he had lived in the Grande Ronde valley for 34 years. His funeral will be held at the Snodgrass Funeral home, with burial at the Masonic cemetery. He is survived by his wife Ruth, four children, siblings, and two grandchildren.
Sutton, Harold L. – Obituary
Harold L. Sutton, a resident of La Grande and former Elgin inhabitant, passed away on March 22, 2004, at the age of 91. Born on March 10, 1913, in Iowa, he moved to Oregon where he worked at Pondosa Pine Mill for many years. Sutton was an active member of the Elgin United Methodist Church and volunteered with the local fire department. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, two daughters, and several foster children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His funeral will take place at Elgin United Methodist Church.
Taylor, Mary Grewell – Obituary
Mary Grewell Taylor, a pioneering settler of Kittitas Valley, passed away on October 1, 1933, at the age of 75 after a month-long illness. Born in Iowa in 1858, she crossed the plains at six and witnessed significant historical events, including the Indian Wars. She was the first teacher in the valley and remained active well into her later years. Her life exemplified the resilience of early settlers as she navigated numerous hardships while contributing to the community’s development.
