After a long and painful illness, interspersed with periods of convalescence, M. D. Lee died at his home [November 22, 1899] in this city last Wednesday morning. Mr. Lee was born in the State of Indiana, on January 6, 1844, and married to Miss Arda Fisher on December 31, 1874. In 1888 he came to Harper County where he resided continuously up to the time of his death.
Mr. Lee was one of our prominent citizens and business men. He was a member of the M. E. Church and of the Knights and Ladies of Security. While engaged in the mercantile business in Anthony, he was elected to the office of county treasurer, in which capacity he served the people for one term, leaving an unblemished official record. After the expiration of his term of office, he reengaged in the mercantile business here, and was so engaged at that time of his death.
He has rendered the city valuable services both as councilman and as a member of the board of education. His official and private conduct has always been characterized by energy, prudence and integrity. By his frank and mirthful hearing won a host of friends. Indeed his friends were as numerous as his acquaintances.
Funeral services were held on Thursday at the M. E. Church in this city, Rev. Engle officiating. He was buried in Forest Park Cemetery.
Mr. Lee leaves a wife and seven children who have the warmest sympathy of the community in their sorrow.
