Charlton, George Carmi – Obituary

George Charlton, one of the pioneers of Kittitas Valley, died yesterday morning [April 14, 1919] at 7 o’clock at the family residence on a farm northeast of Ellensburg. Mr. Charlton had been suffering for the past seven years with heart trouble, which yesterday caused his death. Mr. Charlton was born in Jacksonville, Oregon, November 4th, 1858, and came to the Kittitas Valley in 1881, where he has made his home ever since. Edna Dawes, 90, lifetime Ellensburg resident, died Wednesday [February 29, 1984] at Gold Leaf Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 4, 1893 in Ellensburg, a daughter of the late Moran and Bell (Fulton) Cooke. She and Laurin T. Dawes were married in Ellensburg inn 1933. They farmed in the Fairview District and Mrs. Dawes operated a beauty shop in Ellensburg for many years. They lived in Seattle during World War II and, following retirement, they returned to Ellensburg to make their home on Craig’s Hill. Mrs. Wm. R. Hall died last night [October 16, 1910] at 8 o’clock at her home on West Tenth Street after a short illness. She was 28 years of age and leaves a husband, son, and infant daughter, besides her father, E. I. Mrs. Cecilia J. Michels, widow of George Michels, died late Sunday in the Ellensburg General Hospital, after a prolonged illness. Mrs. Michels was born at Scothaven, Pa., in 1867, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James J. Quinn. At the age of 17, she came to Timberline, Mont., in the company of her father and brother, who were associated with the development of new coal fields for the use of the Northern Pacific Railway on its extension to the Northwest. William J. Wright, 68, valley farmer, was fatally injured yesterday afternoon [August 15, 1934] when he was struck by a car driven by Rex Willard of Pullman as he stepped from behind a car into the highway five miles east of town on the Vantage Road. Mr. Wright, riding to a point near his home with George Minielly, had left the car and stepped from behind the car to cross the highway en route home. Andrew J. Rader who was buried from the Christian Church here last Sunday, died on Thursday, the 10th [January 1901], at the early age of 72 years. He was born in Indiana, came to the Pacific Coast in 1866 and had lived in Kittitas Valley for twenty years. Hallie Dell Uebelacker, 88, of Ellensburg passed away on Thursday, September 5, 1996 at Kittitas Valley Regional Rehab Center in Ellensburg. She was born in Ellensburg, Washington on October 27, 1907, a daughter of William Thomas and Margaret Olive (Ferguson) Montgomery. Hallie’s mother’s family arrived in the Kittitas Valley in 1872, crossing Snoqualmie Pass in wagons and on horseback. Her father drove an eight horse hitch freight wagon from the Dallas, Oregon to Waterville, Washington Territory. After his many trips through the Valley, he decided to settle in the Valley. Following closely in death his wife and a son, E. G. Grindrod, Kittitas Valley pioneer, died at his home on East Capitol Avenue this morning.
