Mrs. Nettie Churchill [w/o Alfred Churchill], mother of Mrs. Chester Cook, died Sunday night [February 16, 1914] at the home of her daughter in the Southeast part of the valley. Mrs. Churchill was 53 years old and had been sick for some time. The funeral was held from the Methodist Church, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Nathan, pastor of the church conducted the services. Velma L. (Toots) Casey, 69, 105 S. Ruby, died Friday [November 24, 1978] at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. She was born September 15, 1909 at Ellensburg, a daughter of the late James J. and Matilda Hayes. She first married Ed Holmes in 1926 at Wenatchee and later married Daniel Casey at Ellensburg in 1947. Both husbands preceded her in death. Mrs. G. Carver, Valley Pioneer, Expires Today. Resident here since 1876; passes at age of 77 after a long illness. Mrs. George W. Carver passed away at her home at 9 o’clock this morning [November 14, 1930] following a long illness and after being bedfast for more than three months, at the age of 77 years. Mrs. Carver was one of the earliest pioneers of the Kittitas Valley, coming here in 1876. Rosetta Curtis was born in Macomb County, Michigan, January 3, 1853. She was married to George W. Urban L. Uebelacker, 85, of Ellensburg, died Thursday [September 22, 1988] at Gold Leaf-Washington Health Care Center. He was born in Ellensburg June 23, 1903, a son of Frank and Anna Uebelacker. Following graduation from Ellensburg High School, he attended St. Martin’s College in Olympia. He was employed by Kittitas County as a heavy-duty equipment mechanic for 30 years, and later was employed by the Kittitas School District for 10 years. He retired in 1968. Fred C. Schnebly, 74, who was born in the Kittitas Valley of a pioneer family, was a director, board president and outstanding leader in the creation and operation of the Kittitas Reclamation District, and for more than 50 years was one of the best known cattlemen of the Pacific Northwest, died at the Valley General Hosptial Tuesday evening [April 12, 1955]. William Samuel Peffers, 71, native Kittitas Valley resident died at Colville, Wash., Saturday, Oct. 8 [1960] while on a fishing and hunting trip. Peffers was born July 24, 1889 in Caribou Canyon and has spent almost his entire life in Ellensburg. He farmed in the Fairview District for many years and retired in 1951. Born Aug. 27, 1902 in Ellensburg, he was a graduate of Ellensburg High School and attended Washington State University. He married Loila Schnebly April 9, 1933 in Ellensburg and then began farming in the Fairview District. Glenn C. Charlton native Kittitas Valley resident died July 2 [1961], at the age of 60 at Eastern State Hospital. Charlton was born Aug. 13, 1900 in Ellensburg and attended the No. 18 Nanum Grade School and graduated from Ellensburg High School. Simon P. Wippel, pioneer Ellensburg resident and a member of one of the Kittitas Valley’s best known families, died at his home Monday [January 10, 1949] at the age of 77. Wippel, who had been a farmer in the valley since 1911, had lived in the county for 57 years. He was a native of Ripley County, Indiana. Mrs. Sina Peffers, of East Kittitas, died very suddenly at her home Monday morning at 4 o’clock [February 10, 1902]. The funeral took place Wednesday. McGranahan, 65, senior vice-president of the National Bank of Commerce, in charge of all branches outside Seattle, Ellensburg pioneer, World War I veteran and one of the state’s best known bankers, died at the family home in Bellevue Sunday morning [October 6, 1957] and will be buried in Ellensburg Tuesday. Ezra [obit says Ed], 83, well-known retired Ellensburg contractor, died at a local hospital Monday [January 6, 1941], following a lengthy illness. A resident of Ellensburg for 37 years, he was widely known throughout this section. For many years he contracted excavation work and house moving here. He is survived by two sons, Jess of Ellensburg and Harry of Malden, Washington, and a daughter, Mrs. Stella McDevitt of Spokane. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Laurin T. Dawes, 70, died at his Fairview District ranch on Sunday [December 5, 1976]. He was born February 21, 1906 at Silverton, Ore. He came to Ellensburg from Portland in 1930. He was married to Edna Cooke in 1933 and was a carpenter for many years prior to moving to his ranch in 1945. He is survived by his wife Edna and one brother, Walter Dawes of Portland, Ore. Winifred Cooke, 83, died Monday [January 13, 1975] at Kittitas Valley Community Hospital. She was born March 13, 1891 in Capac, Mich., and after marrying Chester A. Cooke in 1910 moved to the Edgemont-Thrall area where they farmed. He proceeded her in death in 1950. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Ohlander, Mrs. Frances Bryant and Mrs. Ruth Treischel, all of Seattle, two sons, Bruce of Milton and Bob of Chelan, 12 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Chester Allen Cooke, 60, widely known Ellensburg resident and a Kittitas Valley native, died this morning [January 31, 1950] at the Valley General Hospital. He had been in the hospital four days. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George B. Cooke, who conducted large early-day cattle operations in the valley, Cooke was born here and had lived most of his life in the valley. Mrs. Maude Betty Charlton, Fairview District pioneer died at Bernath Nursing Home Monday, Feb. 24 [1964] at the age of 92 years. She had been a Kittitas Valley resident 80 years. Maude Filer was born March 26, 1871 in Dallas, Tex. and came West to Pendleton, Ore. in a covered wagon at the age of 11 years. Loila M. Charlton, 69, died Saturday [September 30, 1978] at her home on Route 5. She was born Oct. 22, 1908 at Ellensburg, a daughter of the late Fred C. and Margaruite Schnebly. She graduated from Washington State College in 1930 with a degree in home economics. She attended Merle Palmer College, a subsidiary of Northwestern University and taught nursery school at WSC and the University of Washington in the education department.
