Nipissing Tribe
The Nipissing Tribe, part of the Algonkin people, is historically associated with Lake Nipissing, Ontario. First encountered by the French in 1613, they faced Iroquois attacks around 1650, leading to migrations but returned to Lake Nipissing by 1671. Known for their peaceful relations with the French, they embraced Christianity and practiced semi-nomadic lifestyles, primarily fishing and minor agriculture. Their elective chiefs represented various totems, and though small in number, their legacy persists, with many now classified as Chippewa on reservations.
