Coal has been a significant export for Washington since its discovery in the mid-19th century, initially found in various locations such as Cowlitz Valley and Skookum Chuck. Noteworthy explorers like Samuel Hancock and H.A. Goldsborough identified several coal deposits, igniting interest for transportation and mining ventures. By the late 1800s, major discoveries in areas like Renton and Tenino contributed to a burgeoning coal industry. Although early efforts faced challenges, the establishment of railroads and mining companies paved the way for profitable operations, significantly impacting the region’s economy.
