Allakaweah Tribe
The Allakaweah Indians, also known as the Paunch Indians, were identified by Lewis and Clark in the regions of the Yellowstone and Bighorn Rivers in Montana. They numbered approximately 2,300 individuals, including 800 warriors. Their territory coincided with that of the Crow tribe, leading to confusion over their distinct identity. The name “Allakaweah” does not relate to the Gros Ventres tribe, but rather reflects their connection with the Crows, known to their Hidatsa relatives as those who ‘refused the paunch.
