Island City, Oregon Stanley Eugene Thompson, 59, of Island City, died from unexpected natural causes on Aug. 24 at a hospital in Boise. A celebration of life at the Island City School will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday. He was born in Arcata, Calif., on Aug. 11, 1947 to Ana Mae (Posey) and Glen Thompson. He was raised and educated in Oakland, Calif., and Eufaula, Okla. Mr. Thompson enlisted in the Navy in April of 1965. He was twice married, first, about 1868, Alice Jones, of Stockton, N. Y., second, Nov. 17, 1911, Mrs. Josephine Waterman Putnam, who was also of Stockton, N. Y., and where they now (1912) reside. In March 1884, he went to California to live accompanying his parents and lived some of the time in Los Angeles, and in Standish, Lassen County. Lucius Reed, of Abington, Mass., was a descendant of (I) William Reade, who came to this country in the vessel “Assurance de Lo” in 1635, fifteen years after the arrival of the “Mayflower,” and settled in Weymouth, Mass. The line is through his son William Reed, who married Esther Thompson, of Middleboro, whose mother was Mary Cooke, daughter of Francis Cooke, who landed in 1620, from the “Mayflower.”

Byron J. Thompson was born in Gallia County, Ohio, in 1848. He received a high school education, and has since devoted the most of his time to teaching, in which profession he has been very successful; was principal of the public schools of Austin, Mo., and Louisville. He abandoned the profession on account of poor health. Purchasing the Jewell County Monitor, he sprang into the arena of journalism, where he is meeting with deserved success. He is one of the early settlers of Jewell County, is widely known and highly esteemed for his honesty, integrity and ability.

Fort Shaw Industrial Indian Boarding School opened in 1891 in Montana. It was discontinued 30 June 1910, due to declining enrollment. In 1904, it had a famous girls’ basketball team that barnstormed its way to St. Louis playing basketball and performing, and won the “World Championship” at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. This census was requested by the Department of the Interior for a listing of all the Indians enrolled at Fort Shaw Indian School for June 1910 in answer to Circular #448. This survey of Wintergreen Cemetery, Port Gibson, Mississippi, was completed in 1956 by Mr. Gordon M. Wells and published by Joyce Bridges the same year. It contains the cemetery readings Mr. Wells was able to obtain at that date. It is highly likely that not all of the gravestones had survived up to that point, and it is even more likely that a large portion of interred individuals never had a gravestone.

Biographical Sketch of Ira Thompson

Ira Thompson, proprietor Thompson House, is a native of Chautauqua County, N. Y., where he was raised and educated. He enlisted in August 1862, in Company B, One Hundred and Twelfth New York Infantry, and served to the end of the war. Returned to his native town, where he remained till 1875, then came to Hardin County, Iowa; ran a hotel there; in 1879, removed to Battle Creek, Iowa; there ran a hotel also; in August, 1881, he came to Decatur, and has since had charge of this house.

Private 1st Class, Co. D, 119th Inf., 30th Div. Son of B. M. and Daisy Thompson, of Stanly County. Entered service in 1918 at Lexington, N.C. Sent to Camp Jackson, S. C., and later sailed for France, where he was killed in battle on July 22, 1918. Buried in France.
