Edward Hunt’s “Weymouth ways and Weymouth people: Reminiscences” takes the reader back in Weymouth Massachusetts past to the 1830s through the 1880s as he provides glimpses into the people of the community. These reminiscences were mostly printed in the Weymouth Gazette and provide a fair example of early New England village life as it occurred in the mid 1800s. Of specific interest to the genealogist will be the Hunt material scattered throughout, but most specifically 286-295, and of course, those lucky enough to have had somebody “remembered” by Edward.

His father, Henry Snell Keith, and mother, Thalia Alden, also contributed to the family’s historical significance. Horace’s early career included roles at Spalding Brothers before establishing his own successful business, reflecting both his entrepreneurial spirit and New England heritage.

Hiram Charlton took on the publication of the Genealogical and Family History of the State of Vermont for Lewis Publishing. In it, he enlisted the assistance of living residents of the state in providing biographical and genealogical details about their family, and then he published all 1104 family histories in two distinct volumes.
Betty Foreman Chessier, born on July 11, 1843, in Raleigh, North Carolina, recounts her experiences as a slave under Governor Manley. Separated from her family, she worked in the Big House, had minimal clothing, and was not allowed to learn. She witnessed the Civil War’s impact and the chaos of Union soldiers’ arrival, which changed her life. After the war, she relocated to Oklahoma with her child. Chessier emphasizes the value of freedom, prayer, and the influential figures of Lincoln and Booker T. Washington in her narrative.
Leonard R. Manley, born in 1873 in Nortonville, Kansas, rose from humble beginnings to become the president and manager of the Topeka Pure Milk Company, the largest milk business in Kansas. He mastered his trade in the creamery business, starting as a buttermaker and eventually leading the company that grew significantly under his management. A dedicated community member and civic leader, Manley is involved in various organizations and charitable efforts. He married Cora B. Neibarger in 1899, and they have two children, both engaged in their education.
