Edmund Ingalls, son of Robert, was born about 1598 in Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England. He immigrated in 1628 to Salem, Massachusetts and with his brother, Francis, founded Lynn, Massachusetts in 1629. He married Ann, fathered nine children, and died in 1648.

His father, who was a well-known man in Sunapee, died April 11, 1894. Charles received his education in the common schools of his native town and at Wolfboro High School. Captain John P. Knowlton, a retired merchant of Sunapee, was born in that town, October 10, 1821, son of Samuel and Betsey (Pike) Knowlton. The grandfather, Robert Knowlton, was one of the pioneer settlers of New London, N.H., and a leading man in his time. He was a well-educated man and a successful school teacher. John Knowlton, a Revolutionary soldier, came to Dublin, from Massachusetts, about 1790, and was the first settler on the old homestead, on road 28. He married Susan Jennings and reared a family of seven children, among whom was Silas, who was twice married, first to Susanna Nutting, and second to Elizabeth Hardy. Only two of his six children ate now living. His son, Asa, married Lydia A., daughter of Luther and Lydia K. Darling, and has two children. He served in Co. A, 14th N. H. Vols., and was honorably discharged. He now resides on the homestead farm.
