Another Chehalis County pioneer is I. L. Scammon, who was born in Maine in 1822, came to California in 1849-50, making the voyage on the 63-ton schooner Little Traveler. In the autumn of 1850 he took passage for the Columbia River, which was passed by mistake, the vessel making Shoalwater bay. Making his way overland to the Columbia, he went to Salem, Oregon, and to the southern mines, but returning to Washington Territory took a donation claim on the Chehalis River, where the old town of Montesano, now known as Wynoochee, grew up about him. Samuel L. Hopkins, one of the most successful farmers and stock raisers in Newman Township, was born south of Newman on the old Hopkins homestead in the year 1849. In 1884 he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Bell, and is the father of six children. Mr. Hopkins owns four hundred and twenty-seven acres of land which extends nearly to the corporation line of Newman. His mother was, be-fore her marriage, Elizabeth Thomas, and was born in Indiana. In 1940 and 1943, a survey of everyone who had lived in Washington County, Idaho continuously for 50 years or more, was made by the Weiser American. These pioneer residents were especially honored at the Fall Festival held in the fall of both years. So far as is known, the list compiled by the survey is complete and perhaps the only record of its kind in existence.

It contains the cemetery readings Mr. Wells was able to obtain at that date. It is highly likely that not all of the gravestones had survived up to that point, and it is even more likely that a large portion of interred individuals never had a gravestone.

Abstracts of over 600 wills for Vanderburgh County, Indiana, extracted by Mrs. Arthur C. Bitterman. Book A was typed by Mrs. James A. Gentry, book B typed by Mrs. Marvin J. Huff, and published as one by the Vanderburgh Chapter of the DAR. Book A primarily covers wills written or filed within the time period of 1823-1849 and book B includes the years of 1849-1873. In both cases there are wills that fall outside those dates.

HOPKINS, Mary I. Todd9, (Morris8, Allen7, David6, Abraham5, Abraham4, Jonah3, Samuel2, Christopher1) was born in Quasqueton, Buchanan County, Iowa, in 1856, married about 1877, M. M. Hopkins, who was a physician. Before her marriage she taught school for a few years. After their marriage they moved to the state of Washington and afterwards to Alaska. She died in Oregon in 1905. Children: I. Zilpah, m. Elbert Blackmar and they reside in Cal. II. Jessie, m.(???)Hunt, and they reside in Alaska.

Dezell J. Hopkins, 77, died at the hospital Wednesday afternoon [March 11]. He had been taken to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. He had been taken to the hospital only the day before but had been ill for a much longer period from cancer of the liver. Free Inhabitants in “The Creek Nation” in the County “West of the” State of “Akansas” enumerated on the “16th” day of “August” 1860. While the census lists “free inhabitants” it is obvious that the list contains names of Native Americans, both of the Creek and Seminole tribes, and probably others. The “free inhabitants” is likely indicative that the family had given up their rights as Indians in treaties previous to 1860, drifted away from the tribe, or were never fully integrated. The black (B) and mulatto (M) status may indicate only the fact of the color of their skin, or whether one had a white ancestors, they may still be Native American.

Lucy Jane Hopkins, eleven years of age, whose parents are residents of Kalispell, succumbed last evening at St. John’s Hospital as the result of an attack of appendicitis. Her body will be shipped this evening to Kalispell for burial.
