Narraguagus Valley Some Account of its Early Settlement and Settlers

The early settlement of the Narraguagus River in Washington County, Maine, involved significant developments in nearby towns such as Steuben, Milbridge, Harrington, and Cherryfield. Established between 1791 and 1816, these towns evolved from former townships. Key early settlers included Jabez Dorman, John Densmore, Ichabod Willey, and Samuel Colson, who arrived around 1757. Their families contributed to the growth of the region, establishing roots and communal records that reflect the intertwined histories of these communities. Notably, many surnames from the early settlers persist in the area today.

The early probate records of the Province of New Hampshire, from 1635 to 1771, have been published in nine volumes (vols. 31-39) of the set “New Hampshire State Papers” edited by Albert Stillman Batchellor, Henry Harrison Metcalf, and Otis G. Hammond. Originally published in the years 1907-1941 these books are available in many libraries throughout New Hampshire. The list included here contains transcriptions of some of the early probate records for Hampton, New Hampshire. It is not a complete list of the available probate records.

Biographical Sketch of Hon. W. H. Hobbs

Hon. W.H. Hobbs was born in 1837 in New York City and later relocated to New Orleans before settling in La Fayette County, Wisconsin. By 1855, he was in Sac City, Iowa, where he began farming and soon entered public service. He served as clerk of courts and auditor, and later as county treasurer. In 1873, he co-founded a real estate business and established the Sac County bank. Hobbs’s ventures also included land and insurance, and he owned significant property in the area.

Hobbs, Jacob Thomas – Obituary

Jacob Thomas Hobbs, born on July 25, 1839, in Missouri, passed away on May 25, 1918, in North Powder, Oregon, due to liver cancer. At 13, he traveled to California in 1852 and later returned to marry his childhood friend, Mary Estes. Hobbs made numerous westward trips by prairie schooner and is survived by his wife, four of their nine children, and several siblings. A son honored him by stating he was always welcomed wherever he lived.

Hobbs, Kenneth J. – Obituary

Kenneth J. Hobbs, the four-year-old son of Frank and Mrs. Hobbs, passed away on August 27, 1920, due to bowel trouble after a few days of illness. His funeral service was conducted at the Methodist church, with burial at the city cemetery. In a heartfelt card of thanks, his parents expressed gratitude for the support and sympathy shown by friends during their time of grief.

Hobbs, Floyd J. – Obituary

Floyd J. Hobbs, born April 11, 1914, in North Powder, Oregon, passed away on August 18, 2004, at age 90 in Hermiston. He worked at the Umatilla Army Depot and was married twice, first to Bessie Dexter, with whom he had six children, and later to Gladys Hughs. An active sports enthusiast, he enjoyed watching games and contributed to community projects, including the Stokes Landing Senior Center. He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A funeral service is scheduled for August 21, 2004.

Hobbs, Julia B. Dahl Mrs. – Obituary

Julia B. Hobbs, 82, of Gresham, OR, formerly of Baker City, passed away on March 16 at Kaiser Hospital in Portland. Graveside services are set for March 25 at Haines Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Dennis Schmidt. Julia, a graduate of Muddy Creek High School and Eastern Oregon College, worked in retail and taught at Muddy Creek School. She is survived by her son, granddaughter, and great-grandchildren, and was preceded in death by her husband and parents. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Hobbs, Raymond – Obituary

Raymond C. Hobbs, a lifelong resident of Baker County, passed away on December 3, 1982, at the age of 74. Born on April 30, 1908, in New Mexico, he later moved to North Powder, where he graduated high school. Hobbs married Julia B. Dahl in 1929 and spent his early years farming before working at Eastern Oregon Light and Power Co. for over three decades. He was actively involved in the Baker Volunteer Fire Department and the Elks Lodge. He is survived by his wife, son, grandchildren, and siblings.
