Biographical Sketch of Moses William Harvey

Moses William Harvey, born on September 6, 1852, in Delphi, New York, was the son of Samuel and Sarah Scott Harvey. He received a common school education and married Eliza Newman in Columbus, Ohio, in 1875. Harvey began his career in express service in April 1873 and worked for the United States Express Co. before joining Wells Fargo Co. as an agent in Cleveland in 1888. He also held a presidency at Genck Realty Co. and was active in local business organizations.

Harvey, Edna Irene – Obituary

Edna Irene Harvey, aged 99, passed away at her La Grande home on March 19. Born on October 18, 1908, in Springhill, Louisiana, she was the daughter of Allan and Daisy Reeves. She married Leonard Burr “Buck” Harvey and lived in various locations before settling in Oceanside, California, in 1969. Active in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Edna enjoyed gardening with her husband. She is survived by her daughter, two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, and extended family. Her husband predeceased her in 1999.

Charles F. Harvey, Jr.

1st Lt. Charles F. Harvey, Jr., served in the Quartermaster Corps during World War I, hailing from Lenoir County. He was the son of C. F. and Mary Heartt Harvey and married to Lilla Gill Harvey. He entered military service on September 30, 1917, and underwent training at Camp Greenleaf and Camp Greene. Promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on May 8, 1918, he achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant by November 8, 1918, but declined a captaincy, being mustered out on December 3, 1918.

The approved roll of minor Choctaw freedmen contains 473 names. The large percentage of omissions in this class is explained elsewhere. It is quite probable that there are others of this class whose claims have not yet been presented or disclosed.

Girls at the Fort Shaw Indian School

Fort Shaw Industrial Indian Boarding School, established in Montana in 1891, ceased operations on June 30, 1910, due to decreasing enrollment. Known for its 1904 girls basketball team, which won a championship at the St. Louis World’s Fair, the school played a significant role in Indigenous education during its tenure. The 1910 census was compiled under the Department of the Interior to record enrolled students as part of Circular #448. Relevant records are preserved in the National Archives and the Family History Library.
