Marriage records of Liberty County, Georgia, 1785-1895

These marriage records were abstracted from unbound marriage bonds and licenses in the Liberty County Courthouse, Hinesville, Georgia. The names were copied as they were spelled on the bonds, often barely legible and often spelled differently on the same bond. Sometimes the marriages were performed before the licenses were issued. The first date given in the abstracts is the date of the license or bond; the second is the date of marriage. The following abbreviations are used in these abstracts with the meaning indicated:

Elizabeth Avery Nock Gunter, 87, of Bend, a former Baker City resident, died July 3, 2005. Her memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Bend. Ms. Gunter was born on Aug. 12, 1917, at Baker City to Thomas and Emma Nock. She was a Baker High School graduate and attended the University of Oregon at Eugene. La Grande, Oregon Dana L. Gunter, 69, died April 5 at her son’s home in LaPine. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at Grandview Cemetery, La Grande. Mrs. Gunter was born April 5, 1938, in Spokane, Wash., and was raised in Oregon. She was married to Chester Gunter and lived in La Grande for about 10 years. John T. Gunter was born October 8, 1855, at Hico, Benton County, Arkansas, the oldest son of C. D. Gunter, a Tennessean. His mother was a Miss Ward (one-eighth Cherokee), from Georgia, her father, James Ward, having come to this nation with the first Cherokee settlers. After having attended public school until seventeen years of age, John entered the Cincinnati Academy, Arkansas, and there remained until his twentieth year. She was educated in the public schools of the Cherokee Nation and at the Female Semi­nary. She married at Vinita on April 4, 1886, Lucien Webster Buffington, born April 15, 1857, on Beattie’s Prairie, Delaware District. He was educated in the Public Schools of that vicinity.
