Fortney, Nelson David – Obituary

Nelson D. Fortney, 54 years old, died this morning at his home after a brief illness. He is survived by his widow [Della Hinkle], five daughters, Kennie, Edna, and Roxy Fortney of Kansas City and Orphia and Ruby Fortney, both of Springfield, two brothers, Lon and George Fortney, and five sisters, Mrs. Nannie Fortney, Mrs. Ella Shuey, Mrs. Mattie [Samantha] Shuey, Mrs. H. G. Heckley, and Mrs. Nancy Hayes of Springfield. Funeral arrangements are incomplete but burial will be in Green Lawn Cemetery. Springfield Leader, October 10, 1925 Contributed by: Shelli Steedman

Fortney, Jefferson S. – Obituary

Jefferson S. Fortney, 85, former valley resident, died Sunday [December 17] at Yucaipa, Calif. He was born Aug. 29, 1893, east of Kittitas in an area known as Warm Springs. He is the son of the late Levi and Julia Hayes Fortney. He married Alice Anderson in Ellensburg in 1913. He was employed by the Milwaukee Railroad in 1915 and worked as a section foreman and superintendent of the Extra Gang. He moved to Tacoma in 1930 and retired in 1958. Levi J. Fortney Called By Death. Retired Farmer Had Been Resident Of County For 41 Years. Levi Jackson Fortney, aged 66, died last evening at his residence on East Eleventh Street. He was born in Decatur, Iowa, he came to Kittitas County 41 years ago, and had resided in Ellensburg for the past 26 years. He was a retired farmer.
