Biographical Sketch of J. B. Benefiel
J. B. Benefiel, born on April 22, 1847, in Oaktown, Indiana, faced significant challenges after his father’s abandonment in 1867. Taking on family responsibilities, he shifted from law aspirations to various jobs, including roles in the express and agricultural sectors. In 1875, he established the Boss Meat Market in Mattoon, Illinois, where he has since thrived. He married Ellen F. Aldridge in 1874, and though they experienced the loss of their son Roy in infancy, Benefiel has built a successful life and owns real estate in the city.
