George W. Benefiel was born on July 18, 1817, in Lawrence County, Illinois, to Robert and Nancy Benefiel. He married Jane Ryker in 1838 and moved to Coles County in 1855. They had several children, but suffered losses, including the death of Jane in 1867 and their son John in the Civil War. Benefiel served as Wagonmaster and Battalion Sergeant during the war. He remarried Diantha F. Smith in 1868. An early settler of Lawrence County, he is notable for being its second white child.

Smith in 1844, she had six children, though George W. passed away in 1871. Following her first husband’s death in 1861, she married George W. Benefiel in 1868. A successful landowner, she possesses 320 acres and various properties valued around $30,000. Her first in-laws, Jerrad and Clarinda Smith, are both deceased.

Joel B. Benefiel, a lifelong resident of Madison County, has served as the county auditor since 1912 after a successful career in farming and stock raising. Born on December 20, 1867, he pursued education in local schools, later attending high school in Frankton. His family, rooted in local history, has significantly contributed to the community’s development. Mr. Benefiel is well-respected for his integrity and effective administration. He is married to Hannah J. Gusinger and they have seven children, all contributing to the community’s fabric.
