Mrs. Oliver Wood Laid To Rest
Mrs. Oliver Wood passed away at the Wallowa Memorial Hospital Friday morning, June 13, 1951.
Viola [sic – Violet] Maude Henry [sic – Hearing] was born in Linn County, Oregon April 1, 1880, the daughter of George and Mary (Conner) Hearing.
At the age of four, she and the members of her family, came to Wallowa County to a home in the Leap district. On June 28, 1898 she was married to Boone F. Childers and to this union five children were born. Mr. Childers passed away June 24, 1912, and on October 2, 1919 she was united in marriage to Oliver Wood, and two daughters were born to them. From the time of her first marriage she resided in Lostine until 1948 when she and her husband moved to Enterprise.
She is survived by her husband, Oliver Wood; one son, Howard Childers, Enterprise; five daughters, Mrs. Georgia McGinnis, Enterprise, Mrs. Lulu Dimmick and Mrs. Ruth Nuxall, Walla Walla, Mrs. Pauline Cruzan of Portland, and Miss Norma Wood of Oakland, California. One son, Paul Childers, preceded her in death.
She is also survived by one brother, Merle Hearing, Joseph; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Leeper of Medford, and Mrs. Eliza Crossler of Walla Walla; thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Four of her grandsons, Gordon and Pat McGinnis and Robert and John Dimmick, are members of the armed forces overseas.
Funeral services were Sunday, June 17 at 2:00 p.m. from the Booth-Bollman Chapel with Rev. H. C. Stover officiating. Mrs. Patricia Dishman accompanied by her aunt, Mrs. Garnet Best on the organ sang, “Whispering Hope” and “Beyond The Sunset.” Pallbearers were A. B. Miller, Kearns Heasty, Gilbert Wiseman, Adolph Nuxall, Charles Scott and C. P. Crawford, with interment in the Enterprise cemetery.
Mrs. Wood was a quiet woman whose main interest in life was the welfare of her family and her home. She was a loving wife, a wonderful mother and a good neighbor. She will long be remembered by all who knew her.
Miss Norma Wood of Oakland, California, Mrs. Pauline Cruzan of Portland, and Mrs. Lulu Dimmick and Mrs. Ruth Nuxall of Walla Walla were here for the funeral.
