Lostine native Lyle W. Hammack died Sunday, Feb.11, 1996, at the age 0f 85.
A memorial service was held Friday, Feb.16, in the First Unitarian Church in downtown Portland.
He was born Sept. 15, 1910, in Lostine. He attended the Behnke-Walker Business School and the Dale Carnegie Institute. He went to Wisconsin Dairy School in 1928 and in 1937 became owner of Raven Creamery, where he had been an employee when it was known as Raven Dairy. He operated the business until selling it and retiring in 1974.
He was appointed by the governor to the Oregon Dairy Products Commission in 1956, 1957 and 1960. He was president of the board of the Oregon State University Agricultural Research Foundation from 1972 to 1988. He received the Distinguished Service Award of Oregon State University in 1976. From 1970 to 1972 he was president of the American Butter Institute of Chicago and Washington, D.C.
He was a past president of the Downtown Portland Kiwanis Club and the Portland Active Club. He was also a past president of Columbia-Edgewater Country Club.
He was on the board of directors for the Shriners Hospital for Crippled children from 1957 to 1982 and was chairman from 1968 to 1973.
Mr. Hammack married Bernice Miller in 1934. She preceded him in death in 1974. In 1976, he married Winifred Allen.
Survivors include his wife, Winifred; daughters, Connie Morgan of Portland and Sharon Richards of Boise, Idaho; brother, Ross of Rancho Mirage, Calif.; sister, Velva Hofmann of La Grande; step-son, Don Allen of Odessa, Texas; step-daughters, Sonny Smith and Sally Harris, both of Portland, and Dennie Scharer of Phoenix, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled children.
