Keating, Baker County, Oregon

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grays’ West and Co. Pioneer Chapel for Byrl Emele Dean Sr., 70, of 2117 Seventh St. He died early Monday morning at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Portland after a brief illness.

Dean, is a native of Keating, was the son of Matthew and Estella Emele Dean. He received his education in Keating and Baker High School.

He married Agnes Clancey Dean in Baker in May of 1920.

He has been a rancher in the Keating area for many years. In later years, he moved to Baker where he was a representative for the Wheaton Monument Co.

He was a member of Baker Elks Lodge No. 338.

Dean is survived by his widow, Agnes; one son, Bryl Dean Jr., of La Grande; two brothers, Ovel A. Dean and Marvin B. Dean of Baker; two grandchildren, David Edward Dean of La Grande and James Madison Dean of Pendleton; two great-grandsons, Jonathan David Dean of Phoenix, Ariz., and David James Dean of Pendleton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Rev. Robert McNeil of the First Methodist Church will officiate at the services with interment to follow in the family plot at Mt. Hope Cemetery with Baker Elks Lodge No 338 participating in the graveside rites.

Friends who wish may contribute to the Byrl Dean Memorial Fund of St. Vincent’s Hospital Medical Foundation. This may be done through Grays’ West and Co. Also, friends may call at the Pioneer Chapel until noon, Thursday as the casket will not be opened following the service.
