Biographical Sketch of George Carlton Mapes

Mapes, George Carlton; furniture and undertaking; born, Mayfield, O., June 29, 1844; son of Hial S. and Mary J. Mapes; educated, district school, Mayfield Academy, and Willoughby Collegiate Institute; married, Oct. 1, 1863, Nettie N. Krissell, of Euclid, O.; issue, four sons, Harry S., Carey E., Will Carlton, and Guy F.; the latter the only one living; spent early life on a farm; has been connected for thirty years as a resident of the 26th ward of Cleveland; was one of the original committee appointed to make the boundary lines of Collinwood village; was Mayor of the village 1888-1890; during office, opened the Mayor’s Court, graded Main street, laid stone walks, organized the board of Health and Fire Department, built town hall, and bought first fire apparatus; descendants have historic and patriotic record; although almost 70, he is actively engaged in the furniture and undertaking business and insurance.
