Achomawi Indians (from adzúma, or achóma, ‘river’. Dixon). A division of the Shastan family formerly occupying the Pit River country of N. E. California, except Burney, Dixie, and Hat Creek Valleys, which were inhabited by the Atsugewi. A principal village was near Fallriver Mills, Shasta County. The languages of the Achomawi and the Atsugewi, while unquestionably related, are strikingly unalike. The term Achomawi was also employed by Powers to denote all the Indians of the Palaihnihan family of Powell, popularly known as Pit River Indians.
