Susan D. Forbes died Friday at 11 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. E. Warden. She came to Enterprise last July to make her home with her daughter. A succession of colds and the rigor of winter proved more than her frail body could endure and she succumbed to a bronchial attack quite suddenly. Mrs. Forbes was born in Ohio in 1835 and died in Enterprise, Oregon April 4, 1919. She was married to W. I. Forbes at the age of 18 and to this union was born nine children, seven of whom preceded her in death. … Read more

Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon Stella May Hammack, 96, of Pendleton, died Jan. 13, 2003. She was born March 08, 1906, in Cold Springs to Augustus and Eliza Thompson Stumbaugh. Mrs. Hammack grew up in the Asotin and Imnaha areas. She and her mother often acted as house sitters for homesteaders along the Snake River and as a teenager she worked as a cook in sheep camps and on cattle ranches. Services Held For Joe Carper Funeral Services were held at Centralia, Washington, Saturday, March 13, for Joseph K. Carper, former resident of Promise for many years. Mr. Carper passed away at the Swedish hospital in Seattle March 10, where he had been confined for a month. Union Barber Loses Life In Minam River H. D. Tallman, 40, a barber of Union, was drowned in the Minam River, near Minam while fishing in that stream Sunday. There was no one near enough to Tallman to tell what caused him to fall into the river. Whether a misstep caused his precipitation into the water or whether his death was due to a heart attack is not known. She was part of a large family and had nine brothers and sisters. After meeting and marrying Gerald Brown, she moved to Enterprise in 1947 where her husband founded Wallowa Valley Dairy. Child of Mr. And Mrs. L.J. Smith Enterprise, Oregon The death of another child was reported in the streets as being due to influenza, but the physicians belief this was not the case. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Smith of East Crow creek and been ill for a week and tonsillitis developed, which apparently was the cause of death.
