Thomas Arnold Allen

THOMAS ARNOLD ALLEN was b. March 23,1823; m. Lydia N. Dunbar, who was b. June 7, 1828, and d. March 1, 1905. Mr. Allen d. Jan. 10, 1900. They always lived in town, spending their last years on the Flat. They had one child: 1. Clara, b. March 25, 1863. She m. Liberty Kempton and by him had a dau.: A. Lena, who m. Austin Huggins.

Fort Dummer

A Narrative of the captivity of Nehemiah How, who was taken by the Indians at the Great Meadow Fort above Fort Dummer, where he was an inhabitant, October 11th, 1745. Giving an account of what he met with in his traveling to Canada, and while he was in prison there. Together with an account of Mr. How’s death at Canada. Exceedingly valuable for the many items of exact intelligence therein recorded, relative to so many of the present inhabitants of New England, through those friends who endured the hardships of captivity in the mountain deserts and the damps of loathsome prisons. Had the author lived to have returned, and published his narrative himself, he doubtless would have made it far more valuable, but he was cut off while a prisoner, by the prison fever, in the fifty-fifth year of his age, after a captivity of one year, seven months, and fifteen days. He died May 25th, 1747, in the hospital at Quebec, after a sickness of about ten days. He was a husband and father, and greatly beloved by all who knew him.

CYRUS KINGSBURY FLETCHER, second son of Timothy Fletcher who was for a long time a worthy, gifted and zealous deacon of the Baptist Church at Newport-was one of the Committee of Arrangements, and is a most worthy and exemplary farmer. He married Rachel Jacobs, daughter of Luther, and resides on the old “Jacobs Farm,” so long occupied by her grandfather, Whitman Jacobs.

PLINY HALL, son of Martin, born September 21, 1817, was a farmer until he was twenty-one; a clerk in the store twelve years; was U. S. assistant census marshal in 1850, 1870 and 1880; representative in 1851 and 1852, and county treasurer in 1855 and. 1856; U. S. enrolling officer in 1864, and a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1876. Died January 15, 1881.

Henry Marshall Elwell, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen of Langdon, Sullivan County, N.H., son of Robert and Phoebe (Evans) Elwell, was born in this town, April 13, 1839. His paternal grandfather, Benjamin Elwell, a lifelong resident of Langdon, was a wealthy farmer and highly esteemed citizen. He married a Miss Kendall, and had four children, named: Samuel, Betsey, Nancy, and Robert. Revolutionary War The sympathies of the first settlers of Croydon were early enlisted in the Revolutionary struggle. Soon after the Battle of Lexington, they sent Eleazer Leland and Abner Brigham to join the Provincial army; enrolled a company of twelve minute-men; raised eight pounds to purchase a town supply of ammunition, and chose Moses Whipple, Stephen Powers, Phineas Sanger, Abner Brigham and Joseph Hall a "committee of safety."
