Auto Accident Proves Fatal Wendell Hunt Died Monday In Pendleton Hospital From Injuries Wendell Hunt, 21, of Whittier, Calif., who was injured in an automobile accident last week, 15 miles east of Pendleton, died Monday in a Pendleton hospital, where he was taken following the accident. He never regained consciousness. His father and mother who arrived from Whittier two days after the accident, left with the body for Whittier Monday night. CAPT. WILLIAM MARTIN. – Captain Martin, of the first real immigration, that of 1843, is still living in a hale age at Pendleton, Oregon. He was born in West Virginia in 1822, and came west to Missouri in 1841. In 1843 he joined a company coming to Oregon, being intimately associated with Daniel Waldo. Reaching Oregon after the vicissitudes of that eventful march, he took up a claim at Howell’s Prairie, working for Waldo at ten dollars per month, although wages were sixty dollars. He was born October 20, 1914 to William and Amy Owen Long, long-time residents of Haines. His pioneer grandparents, Julia and Alonzo Long were early day residents of Muddy Creek.
