History of Farmersburg Indiana, 1853-1953

The Farmersburg Centennial, held from June 14-20, 1953, marked the 100th anniversary of Farmersburg, Indiana, commemorating its founding in 1853. Sponsored by the Farmersburg Community Club, this celebration highlighted the town’s rich history and progress over a century. The centennial events, including historical exhibits, parades, and community gatherings, was not just a reflection on the past but a commitment to building a future that honored the vision and perseverance of its founders. To commemorate this 100yr event, a committee was formed to create this souvenir book showcasing the town’s history.

The town of Farmersburg owes its origins to the Evansville and Terre Haute Railroad, which prompted James Cummins and George Hopewell to lay out the village on forty acres west of the railroad in 1853. The Ascension Seminary, established shortly before the Civil War, played a pivotal role in the town’s early growth, serving as its principal institution.

Throughout its history, Farmersburg has faced various challenges, including the near dissolution of the town when Captain Crawford moved the seminary in 1872. However, the resilient community continued to thrive, especially after Church Taylor’s addition in 1903, leading to a period of steady growth and development.

Key landmarks such as the Farmersburg Public School, constructed in 1905, and the churches that have served as community centers reflect the town’s commitment to education and faith. Notable institutions, including the Citizens State Bank and the Farmersburg Bank established in 1902, further signify the town’s economic development.
