Biographical Sketch of Thompson F. Martin

Thompson F. Martin, agent O. N. & B. H. R. R. Co., Albion. Has been in the employ of the Union Pacific Railroad during the greater part of the time since 1868. Was first located at Cheyenne, afterward at Antelope, Bushnell, McPherson and Albion. Has been at the last-named place since October 1, 1881. Biographical Sketch of Thomas Wood

Thomas Wood, grocer, is a native of Leicestershire, England; in 1857, came to Ogle County, Ill.; followed farming. Enlisted in 1861, in Company K, Forty-sixth Illinois Infantry, and served to the end of the war. In 1866, he came to Marshall County, Iowa, and there followed farming; in 1871, he came to Decatur, and ran a threshing machine and engaged in breaking prairie. In March 1879, he commenced this business; he sold the past year fifty-five hogs, and owns now 140 hogs.

Biographical Sketch of Thomas Kryger

Thomas Kryger, bookseller, stationer, and Postmaster, was born in Dunkirk, N. Y.; in 1867, came to Holland City, Mich.; in the fall of 1872, came to West Point, Neb., taught school at Rock Creek seven months, afterward engaged in merchandising; June 1873, they removed their stock to Oakdale, where he has since resided; was appointed Deputy Sheriff in 1877; July 1, 1880, was appointed Postmaster; was United States Enumerator in 1880.

Biographical Sketch of T. G. Smith

T. G. Smith, furniture and undertaker, is a native of Ontario; came to Buffalo, N. Y., in 1865; worked at house building about one year; then went to Pennsylvania oil region, where he remained about two years; came to Omaha in 1868; there he followed the carpenter trade. In 1873, he came to Tekamah, where he has since resided, following his trade. In 1878, he commenced his present business, which is rapidly increasing. He now occupies a brick store, which he built in 1881, 24×85 feet, cost about $2,500. He holds the office of Coroner of the county.

Biographical Sketch of Samuel T. Story

Samuel T. Story, farmer, Section 34, P. O. Tekamah, was born in Washington County, Ark. There he was raised. In 1861, he entered the Confederate army, where he served about one year. He then joined the United States army as Superintendent of Transportation; remained in the service about two years; in 1864, came to Burt County, Neb.; located on this farm. He now owns 954 acres of land, about one hundred and sixty acres of which are under cultivation; employs three teams, and is feeding about one hundred and fifty head of cattle and about two hundred hogs.

Biographical Sketch of Samuel P. Bollman

Samuel P. Bollman, County Treasurer, was born in Westmoreland County, Penn., May 11, 1818, living there until 9 years old, when his parents moved to Armstrong County, Penn., where he lived until 17 years old. His father dying, he and his mother returned to Westmoreland County, where he resided about eight years; he was there engaged in teaching school and attending Jefferson College; he then taught school in Pittsburgh, Penn., about five years. Biographical Sketch of Samuel Fried

Samuel Fried, live stock, is a native of Sweden; in 1864, came to Henry County, Ill.; in 1867, came to Oakland, and homesteaded 160 acres of land in Section 31, which he improved; in 1868, he was appointed Postmaster, and held this office till 1875; he then opened a general store, and continued it about three years. He has held various local offices–Assessor, Treasurer of the School Board, and others.

Biographical Sketch of Samuel D. Cornelius

Cornelius, Samuel D. Samuel D. Cornelius, farmer, Section 17, P. O. Tekamah, born in Huntingdon County, Penn.; came to Tekamah in 1857; ran a hotel there about two years; he then worked at the carpenter trade about six years; in 1859 he was appointed Postmaster; held this office six or seven years. He engaged in farming in about 1863, which he has since continued. He owns 160 acres of land; which he homesteaded.

Biographical Sketch of S. S. King

S. S. King, County Treasurer, was born in McKean County, Penn. He enlisted, in 1861, in Company I, First Pennsylvania Rifles; lost his right leg at the battle of North Anna River, Va., May 23, 1864, was discharged June 29, 1865; in 1866, came to Dodge County, Neb., took up a homestead claim, which he afterward sold; in 1872, came to Oakdale, followed farming about six years. In 1878, he was appointed County Treasurer, to fill an unexpired term; in the fall of 1879, he was elected to this office; was County Commissioner from 1875 to 1878.

Biographical Sketch of Robinson Carr

Robinson Carr, firm of Carr & Thomas, livery and feed stable, is a native of Otsego County, N. Y.; in 1853, came to Wisconsin; followed farming; in 1858, came to Burt County, Neb.; engaged in farming, which he continued till 1876, when he engaged in the livery business. He now owns twenty acres of timber land and property in town.

Biographical Sketch of Rev. J. A. Hungate

Rev. J. A. Hungate, Pastor of the Albion Baptist Church, was born in Marion County, Ill., in 1857. In 1864, his father, J. D. P. Hungate, a prominent Baptist minister and missionary in Nebraska from 1859, crossed the plains with his family to Oregon and California, returning in 1873. Rev. J. A. Hungate obtained his academic training at Blair, Neb., and he began his collegiate course at Madison University at Hamilton, N. Y., in 1877, graduating in June 1880. Biographical Sketch of R. Wilson

R. Wilson, County Clerk, Clerk of District Court and Register of Deeds, is a native of Rock County, Wis.; he taught school several years; in 1873, came to Antelope County. In the fall of 1875, he was elected County Clerk. He is now serving his fourth term. From 1874 to the fall of 1875, he held the office of County Superintendent.

Biographical Sketch of R. S. Hart

R. S. Hart, agricultural implements, is a native of Monroe County, N. Y.; in 1865, came to Nebraska; located in the Logan Valley. He owns 266 acres of land, which he improved and now rents. In the fall of 1881, he removed to Lyons and established this business. He enlisted, in 1861, in Company B, Tenth Wisconsin Infantry; served three years. He then re-enlisted in the Hancock Corps; served to the end of the war. Mr. Hart turned the first sod and broke the land where Lyons is now located.

Biographical Sketch of R. H. Rust, Dr.

Dr. R. H. Rust, physician and surgeon and druggist, is a native of Virginia; came, with his parents, to Missouri when a child. In 1849, he commenced the study of medicine; graduated at the Keokuk Medical College in the winter of 1850-51. He has practiced about twenty years in Dallas County, Iowa; in the fall of 1879, came to Blair; June 1881, came to Oakland and opened this drug store. He is probably one of the oldest practicing physicians in the State.

Biographical Sketch of R. A. Templeton

R. A. Templeton, live stock, is a native of Fayette County, Ohio; in 1857, came to Fairfield, Iowa; there engaged in farming and stock-raising; in 1877, removed to Burt County, Neb. He, with Mr. Haywood, fed in 1877, their first season, 100 head of cattle. They are now feeding from 1,000 to 1,200 head. They control over 4,000 acres for pasture and cultivate about 400 acres of corn, on which to feed their stock. They are the largest feeders of stock in this or any of the adjoining counties.

Biographical Sketch of P. L. Rork

P. L. Rork, farmer, Section 11, P. O. Arizona, was born in Chautauqua County, N. Y.; came to Barry County, Mich., in 1835, with his parents; assisted on their farm; enlisted in 1862, in Company C, Eleventh Michigan Cavalry; served to the end of the war. He then came to Burt County, Neb., and settled on his present farm, consisting of 120 acres of land; has held the office of County Commissioner.

Biographical Sketch of O. S. Comar

O. S. Comar, general merchandise, is a native of Bennington County, Vt.; in 1864, came to Columbia County, Wis.; followed wagon making; in 1868, came to Everett Precinct; engaged at farming and wagon-making. March 1877, he opened a grocery store, and gradually worked into a general stock. He enlisted, in 1861, in Company A, Second Vermont Infantry; remained in the service till the fall of 1864.

Biographical Sketch of O. P. Hurford

O. P. Hurford, was born in Canton, Stark County, Ohio, in 1831; educated with the intention of entering the medical profession; reads five languages, and speaks three of them fluently; selected the mercantile business for a livelihood, and entered into business on his own account, in his native town in Ohio, in grain, milling and merchandise. At the age of twenty-two, emigrated from Ohio to Nebraska, and, in company with Mr. F. A. Schnieder, established the first hardware store, under the firm name of Schnieder & Hurford, in Omaha. N. J. Sheckell, attorney at law, is a native of Crawford County, Ind. After receiving his preparatory education, he entered Hamilton & Canada’s Business College, at Hartsville, Ind, where he graduated at the age of fourteen years.
