CHARLES H. PRESCOTT. – The subject of this sketch is second vice-president of the Northern Pacific Railroad. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on the 22d of June, 1839, and is the son of Harrison and Sarah Harris Prescott. His father was a native of Massachusetts, and can date back for three generations as members of New England families. Harrison Prescott died when his son was yet in infancy; and at the age of six he suffered the loss of his mother. James Marvin Strong, 70, of Hoxie, Kan., a former Baker City resident, died Dec. 14, 2006, at his home. His funeral was at 2 p.m. today at the Mickey-Leopold Funeral Home at Hoxie. Pastor Jim Martin officiated. Burial was at the Hoxie Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Fort Riley soldiers. Mr. Strong was born on Feb. 24, 1936, at Baker City to Ellis and Helen Baisley Strong. He married Ruby Lorna Procter on Aug. 7, 1977, at Pendleton. Retired U.S. Army Col. Alphus Clark, 87, a Baker City native, died March 29, 2008, at Shawnee, Kan. Col. Clark, a 33-year Army veteran, will be buried with full military honors at 9 a.m. on May 29 at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Col. Clark was born Aug. 4, 1920, at Baker City to Walter A. Estevan Ochoa was a New Mexican by birth. In his early youth he went to Kansas City, where he obtained employment and acquired a fair knowledge of the English language. An index to the 1884 Hester Roll, compiled by Joseph G. Hester as a record of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in 1882-1883. This roll lists Cherokees residing east of the Mississippi River. Joseph G. Hester, a Special Agent, conducted the enumeration in 1882-1883, and the roll was approved by the Commissioner of Indian Affairs on January 24, 1884. The roll itself provides both the Chapman roll number and the English and Indian names of the individuals.
