Utah, when the Pioneers came, was “Eastern California.” and California a province of Mexico, with which the United States was at war. Unfurling to the breeze the Stars and Stripes, these Mormon colonizers, as American citizens, took possession of the country, and after the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, by which, in February, 1848, the land was ceded to our nation, they organized, pending congressional action upon their petition for a state government, the provisional government of “Deseret” a name taken from the Book of Mormon and signifying “honey bee.” It was in March, 1849 that the first civil government in the Rocky Mountains was thus established. Meantime the surrounding region was explored and colonized, settlements being formed wherever water was found and means of subsistence available. - Beaver County

This volume contains handwritten copies of citizenship certificates issued to newly naturalized U.S. citizens. The applicant’s name and current nationality were noted. The applicant was required to give evidence that he had declared his intention to become a citizen at least two years earlier. Two U.S. citizens attested that the applicant had resided in the United States at least five years and in Utah territory at least one year. They also testified that the applicant was of good moral character and behaved in a manner supportive of the U.S. Constitution. - Incorporation Case Files. 1873-1961

In 1852 the Utah Territorial Legislature provided that the Probate Court should have jurisdiction not only in estate and guardianship matters, but original jurisdiction in civil, criminal, and chancery cases. The Probate Court could act as an appellant court to the Justice of the Peace Courts in the County, and decisions made in the Probate Court could be appealed to the District Court. This series includes those civil cases handled by the Probate Court which are not probate or estate cases. Civil cases include divorce and debt cases. In 1874 the federal Poland Act revoked the jurisdiction of the Probate Court over all but divorce and probate cases. In 1887, the federal Edmunds-Tucker act revoked Probate Court jurisdiction in divorce cases, and with that Act, the creation of this series ended. - Utah, Cache County Records, 1861-1955

Civil cases may include affidavits of publication of summons in those cases where the defendant was not served personally, as well as decrees detailing the disposition of the case. - Divorce Registers of Actions. 1877, 1880
This series consists of a register of actions, labeled “Docket A,” for divorce cases handled by the Davis County Probate Court. The register of actions documents the case number, the names of the parties, the names of attorneys representing the parties, and the dates on which individual documents in the case were filed with the court. In 1852 the territorial legislature gave county probate courts jurisdiction over divorce cases. Inquests, or hearings, were to be held on the bodies of persons who were supposed to have died by unlawful means to determine the cause of death and whether or not it was felonious. In practice, this also included inquests on those individuals whose deaths may have been natural, but where the cause was not certain. On the reel, the register is followed by individual certificates. - Ogden Birth Register, 1890-1905
The Ogden City Recorder kept a register of births occurring within Ogden which included a name, parents, date of birth, residence, race, sex, whether stillborn or live birth, name of attending physician and remarks. The recorder also collected supplemental information confirming births in the form of affidavits and birth certificates, including some for births prior to 1890. These volumes were used to record the filing of individual documents in each case file heard by the Probate Court. The entries include the names of the parties involved in the case, names of counsel, the case type, dates on which documents were filed, and a brief description of the document. The entries act as a chronology for each individual case. Many entries also include a note if the court costs were paid in the case. Case types include criminal hearings and various types of civil suits. The Probate Court had jurisdiction over many types of actions until 1874 when the federal Poland Act revoked the jurisdiction of the Probate Court over all but divorce and probate cases. In 1887, the federal Edmunds-Tucker act revoked Probate Court jurisdiction in divorce cases, and with that Act, the creation of this series ended. The first volume also includes brief judgment records for four cases that postdate the registers of actions in the book. These entries include the case number, the parties listed as debtor and creditor, the amount of the judgment, the date of entry, and a page reference to the court minute book.

2,593 territorial case files of the U.S. district courts of Utah, 1870-1896. The district courts were located in Salt Lake City, Ogden, Provo, and Beaver. Most of the cases involve polygamy, but other issues were dealt with as well, including robbing of the mails, illegal voting, violations of liquor and tobacco tariff laws, possession of counterfeit coins, and embezzlement. Case files act as documentation that tracks criminal cases as they proceed through the court system and subsequently become the official files in reference to individual cases. The records usually contain the following information: case number, defendants name, filing date, charges, names of witnesses, and court actions taken. These records may also contain information about the counsel for defendant, names of jurors, verdicts, statements of witnesses, and judgments. Some case files may include these documents: petitions to the court, transcripts, warrants of execution and confinement, warrants of death, notices of appeal, complaints, orders to show cause, court orders to the jury or defendant, and trial evidence. Documents such as warrants, subpoenas, and affidavits may also be included.

These volumes record individuals’ vows to later become United States citizens and to renounce their current citizenship. The volumes have standardized forms for declarations of intention with blanks for insertions of the individual’s name, former sovereign, date, and signatures of the individual and the court clerks witnessing the statement.

- Prisoner’s Pardon Application Case Files. 1892-1949
Case files consist of letters to the Governor, a formal application for a pardon, petitions and letters of support from the public and officials connected to the case and during the first 40 years, case files often contained court transcripts, biographical sketches, prison evaluations and a wide variety of related documentation. Cases illustrate the process of review by the board of cases of prisoners incarcerated in the Utah prison system to determine if they should be released before their regular sentence ended. Documents contain personal data about the prisoner, criminal activity, family background and evaluation of the prisoner’s adjustment to incarceration. - Pardons Granted Record Books. 1880-1921
Each entry includes the name of the person pardoned, the court in which the case was originally tried, the type of crime committed, the term of sentence, and usually a short explanation of the reasons for granting the pardon.

Database from the LDS Church History Library containing a compilation of names obtained from rosters and other reliable sources of individuals who immigrated to Utah during this two-decade period. Each company is listed under its captain’s name, and basic information is provided including a photograph of the captain, where available. Many company pages include a list of diaries, journals, letters, and reminiscences written by company members, as well as contemporary reports about the company. 3,907 land management tract books containing official records of the land status and transactions involving surveyed public lands arranged by state and then by township and range. These books indicate who obtained the land, and include a physical description of the tract and where the land is located. The type of transaction is also recorded such as cash entry, credit entry, homesteads, patents (deeds) granted by the Federal Government, and other conveyances of title such as Indian allotments, internal improvement grants (to states), military bounty land warrants, private land claims, railroad grants, school grants, and swamp grants. Additional items of information included in the tract books are as follows: number of acres, date of sale, purchase price, land office, entry number, final Certificate of Purchase number, and notes on relinquishments and conversions. - Arizona Land Patents online. Index and images of applications for Indian war service medals. In 1905 the Utah legislature awarded service medals to veterans who served between 1850 and 1872 in conflicts with Native Americans. The collection is located at the Utah State Archives and is Series 2220. The applications are arranged alphabetically by veteran’s name and include age, birthplace, residence, war served, date enrolled, rank, commanding officer, places served, years served, and type of service. - Utah, Indian War Service Affidavits, 1909-1917
Digital capture of service affidavits of veterans who served in the militia during the Indian Wars. Original records located at the Utah State Archives. The collection is arranged alphabetically by surname within box and folder number. The collection is Series 2217. The affidavits were created to assistant in validating pension claims. There are three types of forms: affidavit of soldier, affidavit of widow or child, and affidavit of witness. In most cases there will be two images per affidavit.

- Utah, Civil War Service Records of Union Soldiers, 1861-1865
Union service records of soldiers who served in Captain Lot [Lott] Smith’s Company,Utah Cavalry. The records include a jacket-envelope for each soldier, labeled with his name, his rank, and the unit in which he served. The jacket-envelope typically contains card abstracts of entries relating to the soldier as found in original muster rolls, returns, rosters, payrolls, appointment books, hospital registers, prison registers and rolls, parole rolls, inspection reports; and the originals of any papers relating solely to the particular soldier. For each military unit the service records are arranged alphabetically by the soldier’s surname. The Military Unit field may also display the surname range (A-G) as found on the microfilm. Each card gives the soldier’s name, unit, the application number, the certificate number and the state from which the soldier served. In some cases, the soldier’s rank, terms of service, date of death and place of death are given. The index cards refer to pension applications of veterans who served in the U.S. Army between 1861 and 1917. The majority of the records pertain to Civil War veterans, but they also include veterans of the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Insurrection, Indian wars, and World War I. - Utah, Grand Army of the Republic Membership Records, 1879-1934

A few records may be earlier or later. - Death Certificate Electronic Index. 1904-1954
The Utah Office of Vital Records and Statistics began issuing death certificates in 1904. A death certificate is the permanent legal record of an individual’s death. Each death certificate includes the decedent’s full name, date of death, county where death occurred, decedent’s race and gender, place and date of birth, marital status, occupation, permanent residence, place and date of burial, time of death, chief cause and contributory factors of death, and if applicable, where illness was contracted and duration of illness. Death certificates also include the names and birthplaces of parents. After 1919 death certificates indicated whether an autopsy had been performed and provided immediate surgical history prior to death. After 1935 state law required the inclusion of information about violent deaths, including accidents, homicides, and suicides. Certificates indicate whether death occurred at home, in a public place, or in the workplace. In 1940 the certificates began including Social Security numbers and information about the decedent’s veteran status. Prior to 1910 permits relating to the transport of corpses were included with death certificates. - Utah Death Certificates, 1904-1964
