Texas African American Cemeteries
During a stroll through the Oliver Powell cemetery in Smithville, we discovered a terribly neglected and overgrown segment of burial grounds that was the segregated section for African American families. It’s truly horrifying. If you have any people in this cemetery, their graves are being lost to neglect and overgrowth. The cable and gas companies have run utility lines through large swaths of the African American side. I’m not sure who to contact about this, but please feel free to alert concerned parties.
