Sumpter, Claude Ruel – Obituary

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 1996, in St. Johns Funeral Home Chapel for Claude Ruel Sumpter, a retired Hyster Co. shipping clerk who died July 27 at age 94. Mr. Sumpter was born April 29, 1902, in Crabtree. In 1930, he married Nellie Long, who died in 1990. Surviving are his son, John of Gresham; brother, Don of Tigard; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Disposition was by cremation. Alexander Sumpter, residing in Union Grove, devotes his attention to general farming and to the raising of chickens and his business has assumed extensive proportions, bringing a good financial return. He was born in Yorkville, Wisconsin, September 6, 1864, and is a son of John and Mary Ann (Cheasman) Sumpter, both of whom were natives of Lincolnshire. England, born in 1818 and 1821 respectively. Sumpter, Nellie Long – Obituary

Nellie Sumpter of North Portland died Tuesday in a Portland hospital of complications arising from hypoxemia. She was 79. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of St. John’s Funeral Home. She was born July 22, 1911, in Baker. Her maiden name was Long. She married Claude Sumpter on Sept. 28, 1930, in Albany. Mrs. Sumpter was a homemaker. She and her husband lived in Portland for about 20 years before moving to the Oregon coast about 1970.
