Biography of Augustus A. Smith, Dr.

Dr. Augustus A. Smith, son of Columbus and Annie McEachin Smith, was born in Telfair County, Georgia, July 15, 1846. At the age of fifteen, a few months before the close of the War Between the States, he enlisted in the Confderate Army, serving until the close of the war. In 1875 Dr. Smith was graduated with first honor from the Savannah Medical College, Savannah, Georgia, and served an interneship at the Savannah Hospital. At the first enumeration of the inhabitants of eastern Vermont, as made by the authority of New York in 1771, Norwich was found to be the most populous of all the towns of Windsor County, having forty families and 206 inhabitants. Windsor followed with 203, and Hartford was third with 190. The aggregate population of the county (ten towns reported) was then but 1,205, mostly confined to the first and second tiers of towns west of the Connecticut River. Biographical Sketch of Abner Smith

Abner Smith, from Needham, Mass., came to Dublin, now Harrisville, soon after the Revolution, and lived here until his death, in 1833. His son, Aaron, was born in 1791, and died in 1840. During his life he was engaged in the manufacture of earthen ware, at Pottersville. Aaron, Jr., was born in 1822, and during his early life was engaged with his father in the pottery business. He was one of the selectmen thirteen years, town representative of Dublin seven years, and was county commissioner four years. He occupies the homestead, on road 32.

THOMAS U. SMITH is a resident of Hadensville Precinct, and was born on this farm, February 21, 1858. He is the eldest of two children born to R. L. and Lucy A. (Young) Smith. The father was born on this farm in July, 1822. The grandfather, Jesse Smith, of Virginia, traded property in the city of Richmond for a farm near Russellville; that farm he soon after sold and bought this farm, then consisting of 300 acres, which has since been increased to about 700 acres.
