Biography of W. H. Sarver

W. H. Sarver, born March 1, 1835, in Sumner County, Tennessee, was the son of Henry and Mary O. Sarver. Educated at the University of Medicine in Nashville, he began practicing in Logan County in 1856. Sarver was a successful physician and also engaged in farming and commerce, owning mills and a carding machine. A dedicated family man, he married Fannie S. Gaines, with whom he had six children. A member of the Masonic order and the Christian Church, he was a notable community figure and Democrat.

I. F. Sarver, born January 24, 1869, in Ohio, moved to Kansas at age two. His significant popularity and business acumen led to his election as sheriff of Sedgwick County in 1914, a position he held until 1916. Sarver’s early life on a farm and his education at Washburn College shaped his self-reliance. Before his sheriff tenure, he worked in the hotel and livestock commission businesses. Sarver married Mary R. Guyer in 1898, and they had one daughter, Josephine, actively participating in their community and church.
