Leatha A. Rountree, an 80-year-old resident of Salinas, passed away at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz following a brief illness. Originally from Oregon, she had lived in Salinas since 1964. She is survived by her husband, George, their son Richard, two grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. In accordance with her wishes, there will be no services, and a private burial is planned. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are handled by Normans Family Chapel.
Joseph Dixon Rountree, born on August 20, 1898, in Lenoir County, served as a Private 1st Class in Co. C, 1st Div., 28th Reg. He entered military service on April 19, 1917, and was later deployed to France. Rountree fought bravely at the Battle of Cantigny, where he was wounded on May 30, 1918, and succumbed to his injuries the following day. He is remembered as the first soldier from Lenoir County to die in World War I, honored posthumously for his sacrifice.
