Mullen, Etta Emma Orr – Obituary

Mrs. Etta Emma Mullen, 69, died this morning [December 10, 1937] at her home in Kittitas. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. A. M. Johnstone of Seattle; Mrs. Mabel Wheeler of Seattle; Mrs. Lois Kenworthy of Seattle; and Violet Hickman of Fullerton, Calif.; three sons, V. E. Mullen of Port Angeles; L. N. Mullen of Kittitas and V. O. Mullen of Portland, Ore.; and two sisters, Mrs. Cora M. Gates of Denver and Mrs. Povery Ludeman of Spokane. Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock at the Honeycutt Chapel. “The San Antonio Story” by Sam Woolford, with contributions from his wife Bess Carroll Woolford, is a history of San Antonio, Texas. Published in 1950 by Joske’s of Texas, the book was conceived as a remedy for the lack of historical knowledge among San Antonio’s school children, a concern identified by Herbert U. Rhodius, chairman of the Municipal Advertising Commission of San Antonio in 1948-49. Rhodius and his colleagues believed that a readable and authentic history could address this educational gap, making it suitable supplementary reading for public junior high schools.

Interviewer: J. M. Johnson Person Interviewed: Mack Mullen Location: Jacksonville, Florida Age: 79 Mack Mullen, a former slave who now lives at 521 W. First Street, Jacksonville, Florida, was born in Americus, Georgia in 1857, eight years before Emancipation, on a plantation which covered an area of approximately five miles. Upon this expansive plantation about 200 slaves lived and labored. At its main entrance stood a large white colonial mansion. In this abode lived Dick Snellings, the master, and his family. Compiled military service records for 1,235 Rough Riders, including Teddy Roosevelt have been digitized. The records include individual jackets which give the name, organization, and rank of each soldier. They contain cards on which information from original records relating to the military service of the individual has been copied. Included in the main jacket are carded medical records, other documents which give personal information, and the description of the record from which the information was obtained.

The Morey Family, to which belonged the late Mrs. Paddock Richmond Read, is an old and long established one in New England. The name has been spelled Morey, Mowry, Mowrey, etc. The family which settled in the Plymouth Colony spelled the name Morey, while other branches made their home in Rhode Island, where the spelling of the name was changed to Mowry.
