Established around a mill operated by Sheshbazzar Bentley Sr. and Jr. on Pigeon Creek in 1816, the town grew to a population of 300 by 1868. The author traces the origins of Bentleysville back to the 1770s to document the earliest settlers, while also providing context through significant national events like the Whiskey Rebellion and the Civil War. Although Bentleysville’s history as a village ended before 1900, this work preserves its legacy for future generations.
James Daniel Hedge, a prominent newspaper editor, has recently established himself in Redwood City as the Managing Editor of the Redwood City Democrat. Born in Redwood City, he received his education locally and at Stanford University, furthering his business acumen at Healds Business College. With thirty-two years in California, including three in Goldfield, Nevada, Hedge has spent the past twenty-six years in San Mateo County. He married in 1906 and has two children, Roland L. and Norman J. Hedge, and is affiliated with the Redwood Parlor No. 66 of the N.S.G.W.
