Al Grunden, a 41-year-old man from Ellensburg, died after an accidental fall in the Kittitas County Jail on March 19, 1940. Just hours after being committed for a minor intoxication charge, he fell from the jail’s tank, suffering a fatal basal skull fracture. Sheriff Wayne Ballard witnessed the incident, which he believed resulted from Grunden’s nervous condition. An investigation by Coroner Phil Davidson determined no autopsy was needed. Funeral services took place at Honeycutt Parlors, with burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
