Edward Hunt’s “Weymouth ways and Weymouth people: Reminiscences” takes the reader back in Weymouth Massachusetts past to the 1830s through the 1880s as he provides glimpses into the people of the community. These reminiscences were mostly printed in the Weymouth Gazette and provide a fair example of early New England village life as it occurred in the mid 1800s. Of specific interest to the genealogist will be the Hunt material scattered throughout, but most specifically 286-295, and of course, those lucky enough to have had somebody “remembered” by Edward.

James Cate

JAMES CATE was b. in Greenland in 1747, m. first, -, Hannah Ayers (?), who was b. in 1746, and d. in Cornish April, 1780, aged 34; m. second, Hannah Huggins, dau. of John and Hannah Ayers Huggins, b. in 1757, and d. in Cornish Aug. 22, 1788, aged 31. He was a Revolutionary soldier. He d. in town Nov. 19, 1802, aged 55. They lived in the north west part of the town. Children, both by first wife: 1. JAMES, JR., b. Sept. 7, 1775. 2. LEVI, b. -, 1777; d. Feb. 12, 1835.

Roscoe Simmons Cate, an attorney of Muskogee, was born in Bradley county, Tennessee, on the 2d of September, 1876, his parents being William Lea and Joanna E. (Julian) Cate, the former an educator. Roscoe Simmons Cate obtained his education in the public schools of St. Louis, Missouri, and of Little Rock, Arkansas, while his professional training was received in the Benton College of Law of St. Louis, from which he was graduated in June, 1901. The records include individual jackets which give the name, organization, and rank of each soldier. They contain cards on which information from original records relating to the military service of the individual has been copied. Flora, Oregon Jeniece E. “Jenny” Cate, 57, died March 12, 2005, at Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, Wash. She was born on Aug. 24, 1947 in Enterprise to Glenn (Blackie) McElroy and Jean Burleigh McElroy. Mrs. Cate grew up in Flora and Irrigon. She graduated in 1965 from Riverside High School and attended Blue Mountain Community College. She enjoyed reading, knitting, science fiction movies and cats.
