John Abby, an early New England settler, was born circa 1613 and likely arrived in 1635. He settled in Salem, obtaining land in 1637 and becoming a freeman in 1685. Born in Illinois in 1861, he studied at Kansas University, practiced medicine in Newton, and built a prominent family home there in 1912.
