Waelty, Christina Ida – Obituary

Christina I. Waelty passed away at the Wallowa County Nursing Home in Enterprise on Saturday, April 23, 1983. She was born on November 3, 1889, the 5th of 10 children born to Peter and Gertrude (Huber) Goebel, and she was their first child born in Wallowa County.

She married Murland Edwin Waelty on July 5, 1909 in Enterprise and became the housewife of a rancher for 49 years.

Christina was well-known for her needlecraft, flowers, culinary skills and attention to the whole family. She lived in various homes in and near Wallowa until 1973. She spent her final years in the Wallowa County Nursing Home.

Her husband preceded her in death. While they had no children of their own, she “adopted” her many nieces and nephews. Those surviving her are: brother, Charles R. Goebel, Wallowa; nieces and nephews, Shirley Mitts, Marie Wiecks, Georgia Griffin and Guy Goebel, of California; Bette Weyand, Marciel Sevy and Phyllis Tuning of Idaho; Colleen Bosch and Dr. Joyce Ostrander of Washington; Bonnie Looney, Hilma Murphy, Harold Goebel, Leo Goebel, of Oregon; and Jack Goebel of Montana.

Graveside services were held April 26 at the Wallowa Cemetery with Lester Wells officiating. Vault interment followed.

Those attending the service from out of the county were; Mr. and Mrs. John Waelty, Fred Murphy, Mrs. Joe Duff, of La Grande; Bette Weyand of Parma, Idaho, Dr. Joyce Ostrander and Vanessa of Bellevue, Washington, and Colleen Bosch of Spokane.
