WPA Annals of Cleveland Ohio, 1818-1937

During the New Deal Era, workers of Annals of Cleveland staff summarized and indexed material from early Cleveland newspapers, beginning with the inaugural issue of the city’s first paper, the July 31, 1818 Cleaveland Gazette and Commercial Register. The project provided jobs for unemployed white-collar workers during the Depression of the 1930s and created an important record of early life and thought in the city of Cleveland.

Cleveland Court Record Series, 1837-1877:

The Court Record Series of the Annals of Cleveland presents the material of historical interest which is found in court records. The value of these records lies in their revelation of the ordinary life and business relationships of the times. The abstracts tell the story and state the facts contained in these cases rather than explain the legal angles involved, which are mentioned only when needed to clarify the story. Each abstract is written chronologically, starting with the earliest event detailed in the case and continuing through the chain of events which leads to the filing of the suit. Thus the filing of the lawsuit, the decision of the court and notice of appeal appear at the end of the abstract in the order indicated. Names have been deleted from divorce and criminal cases where omission seemed justified.

Cleveland Plain Dealer Index 1933-1938:

This selective index. of Ohio news and opinion, compiled from the Final Edition of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, is intended as a key or guide to the news and not as digest or summary. It is however, a source of information in itself without reference to the newspaper or to the microfilm copy.
