Esopus (sip ‘river’-us ‘small’). A division of the Munsee that lived along the w. bank of Hudson r. in Greene and Ulster cos., N. Y., above the Minisink, who formed the main division. Esopus is the old name of Kingston, which was their principal rendezvous. Under this name were included the Catskill, Mamekoting, Waoranec, Warranawonkong, and Wawarsink, sometimes called the five tribes of the Esopus country. They continued to reside about Kingston until some joined the Moravian Munsee and Mahican in Pennsylvania, and others placed themselves under the protection of the Iroquois. About the year 1775 the remnant were at Oquanga, with fragments of other tribes. (J. M)
