Information about the Serial Number

Male Commissioned Officers’ serial numbers start with the letter “O”
Warrant Officers’ serial numbers start with the letter “W”
Flight Officers’ serial numbers start with the letter “T”
Enlisted serial numbers start with the number “1”
National Guard serial numbers start with the number “2”
Selective Service (“Draft”) serial numbers start with the number “3” or “4”
The second number in the non-commissioned officer’s and private’s serial number indicates the “Army Area.”

  1. I am trying to find a service record for my cousin who I believe was a pilot who went down in the Atlantic in WW2. His name is James Donnelly jr. His birth date is 26 Jan 1920. I don’t know the date he died but I believe it was 1942. He was a resident of New Jersey. I have found only the following entry in “State Summary of War Casualties — New Jersey” — DONNELLY, James J., Jr., Pfc., USMCR. Parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Donnelly, Sr., 48 Neptune St., Jersey City, NJ (na)

      1. Thanks Dennis. My problem is any application for a service record requires a service number, which I don’t have. I’m going to contact the archives in Virginia to see if they can help.
