Cambridge Massachusetts Directories 1848-1972

This collection comprises a total of 65 directories which cover the years of 1848-1972 (incomplete). This collection contains materials from the Cambridge Room, the Cambridge Public Library’s Archives and Special Collections, and have been placed online at archive.org. We have linked to the main page for each directory, enabling you to either browse the directory like a book, or download the whole manuscript to your computer, free of charge.

Directories generally included:

  • City and County officials.
  • Schools, churches, hotels, fraternal organizations and societies.
  • Advertisements, including an index to advertisers.
  • An alphabetical list of residents and businesses with street name, and occupation of residents or type of business.

    • Hi Susan,

      Not in the sense of being a searchable database. These are more like digital versions of a directory you research at a library. Each directory has an alphabetical section to it, and if you view it online or download the PDF you can search the OCR’d text.

      My favorite way to use them is to download the PDF’s of them all to my computer, and then allow my computer to index them, so that I can do a search of them all at once using my Windows search. But remember the search as always with OCR is only as good as the clarity of the text to the OCR program. There will be errors.
