M.J. MORLAN. – This prominent citizen of The Dalles was born in Lake County, Ohio, in 1835. In 1846 he moved to La Salle County, Illinois. In that state his parents were successful in securing good land and in improving their farms; and this was the home of our subject until he attained his majority. With a somewhat limited education, but with abundance of muscle and determination, he began life for himself working as a hired hand on his father’s farm, and saving nearly all his earnings. Wallowa, Wallowa County, Oregon Henry L. Finley, Early Wallowa Co. Settler, Dies Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Milton Christian church for Henry L. Finley who passed away Monday afternoon at St. Mary’s Hospital in Walla Walla, Washington. Truman Robbins, local pastor, was in charge of the services and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Moore of Athena sang “No Night There” and Beyond The Sunset”. Cora “Lois” Moberly, 78, of Milton-Freewater and a Haines native, died Sunday, Nov. 20, 2005, in Walla-Walla, Wash. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 26, at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater. A man of sterling worth and a well-known citizen of Malheur, was born in Minnesota in 1860, and with his parents moved to this state in 1864, settling near Walla Walla, Wash. He received his education in the schools of Milton, Or. and then followed farming in that section until 1885. Moving to Morrow County, near Heppner, he followed the sane avocation until 1890. Allen, early pioneers of Wallowa passed away in the Walla Walla Hospital of a heart attack Thursday evening, January 24, 1952. Aletha C. Loney, aged four months, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Loney, who lives at Dry Creek died yesterday morning [July 31, 1902] at 8 o’clock at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Baxter, 329 Craig Street. Death resulted from stomach trouble. The little child was brought to this city Sunday for medical treatment. The funeral will occur this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Baxter, Rev. Mr. Armsfield, of Dixie, officiating. Enterprise, Wallowa County, Oregon Another Old Settler Passes To Eternal Home W.S. Dishman, an early settler of this county, well remembered by all the older residents, and father of Mrs. George S. Craig of this city, died at Whittier, Cal., Tuesday night, September 12, of illness due to old age, for he was in his 89th year. The body was brought to Portland for burial, the funeral being held Sunday afternoon from the home of William I. Dishman, a son of the deceased. Wallowa, Oregon Roberta Johnson Bird died Aug. 5, 2006, at the Odd Fellows Home in Walla Walla, Wash. She was 87. Mrs. Bird was born June 15, 1919, in Wallowa to William E. and Laura B. Johnson. She graduated with honors from Wallowa High School in 1936. She walked the five miles to Wallowa High School and returned daily unless some kind person gave her a ride. This was during the Great Depression before school buses ran in the county. The Weinhard family of Wallowa was generous in this regard, and she valued their friendship all her life. HAVERMALE. – Reverend Mr. Havermale, a leader in the business and social circles of Spokane Falls, was born in Maryland in 1824, and removed with his parents to Ohio while but a boy of eight, and at the age of twenty went to Illinois. There he came under religious influences, and undertook the work of preaching the gospel. For twenty-one years he gave his life and strength to his sacred calling. Besides her husband she is survived by four daughters and one son, Mrs. Alice Barrow and Mrs. Charlotte Lundy of this city, Mrs. Margaret Garrett of Seattle and Mrs. Roy Zaring of American Falls, Idaho and Charles McLean of Finn, Montana. LEE MOORHOUSE. – It was some years before the Inland Empire realized its own wealth. The hills were formerly accounted worthless. Mr. Moorhouse was among the first to dissipate that notion. The Prospect Hill farm, of four thousand acres, eighteen miles west of Pendleton, of which he was superintendent, during his incumbency of four years, produced two hundred and fifty thousand bushels of wheat. Gladys Irene Yost Lifetime resident of Wallowa County, Gladys Irene Yost, of Enterprise, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 1987 at St. Mary’s Medical center in Walla Walla, Wash. She was 64. Gladys was born Jan. 27, 1923 at the family homestead in the Leap Area, the daughter of Louis and Hazel West Lathrop. On Aug. 25, 1942 she married rancher Paul J. Mrs. Ludwig Haun died on Tuesday evening of last week at the family home in O.K. Gulch very suddenly. She had been in her usual health and had prepared the evening meal as usual and was in the yard when stricken and died at 11:30.
