Brakeman Killed At Hilgard Saturday William Wall a brakeman in the employee of the O.W.R.& N. company, was instantly killed last Saturday night at Hilgard; when he stepped between two engines as they suddenly came together. His skull was crushed. Mr. Wall was born at Leavenworth, Kansas thirty-one years ago. He was unmarried making his home with a brother in La Grande. The funeral was held at La Grande Wednesday. Eva R. Hessemer, 94, of Tacoma, died Mon., June 28, 1993. She was born in Union, OR. Her grandparents settled in Oregon’s Grande Ronde Valley after journeying from Independence, MO over the Oregon Trail. She resided in Montesano, WA until 1960 when she moved to Goleta, CA following her husband’s retirement. Word has been received of the death of Mary Hazel Smith Lyon. She was born in Linwood, Nebraska, March 23, 1889, the daughter of George and Kathryn Smith. The family moved to eastern Oregon in the early 1890’s, settling in La Grande. They later moved to Elgin in 1898. Her father was bookkeeper for the Goodnough Mercantile Store in Elgin until his retirement. Hazel was in the first graduating class from Elgin High School in 1910. McAnish, Lester – Obituary

Fatal Hunting Accident Lester McAnish, 31, farmer of the Alicel neighborhood was instantly killed Tuesday when his gun accidentally discharged and he received a charge of buckshot in the breast. It is thought he was crawling through the brush, dragging the gun by the muzzle. He was alone at the time and his body was found late that evening by a searching party. Died of Heart Disease On last Tuesday morning, Mrs. Mary Ann Emery, wife of H.C. Emery, of this city, died after a brief illness of less than one hour. For some years the aged lady had suffered from heart disease and the morning of her death suffered an attack, which was attended with fatal results. Men Killed In Wreck Chester A. McLaughlin, aged 24, and Harvey Folkestad, an I.W.W., aged about 43, were killed in a freight train wreck early Monday morning when an extra east freight train was derailed at Perry. While passing Perry at 1:45 a.m. the brake team came down on the fourth car from the engine, and as a result the six following cars left the track.
