Miss Margaret Horton, sister of Mrs. C. Hancock, editor of the Haines Record and former member of the North Powder school faculty, died in a Seattle hospital Wednesday. On Friday last, Mayor Kennedy received the sad news from Monmouth, Polk county, that his father, Mordecal Kennedy, had died after a short illness. Mayor Kennedy was absent when the telegram announcing the serious illness of his father reached here, and on returning home from Elgin, telegraphed to ascertain his condition. She had been ill a long time. She was born at Chippewa Falls, Wis. December 20, 1866, and came to La Grande 53 years ago. Mrs. John Evans, a few moments before apparently in her usual health, dropped dead in the huckleberry fields at the second crossing of Wolf Creek Friday.
