Summerville, Union County, Oregon Native of Union County Dies Joseph Merrill Burnaugh, 63-year-old farmer of Summerville, died Sunday, Dec. 26, at a local hospital following a long illness. He was born Feb. 25, 1880, at Elgin, and had lived in Union county all his life, and was a member of the Christian church. Among survivors are his widow, Emma, two daughters, Mrs. E. W. Marks of Darrington, Wash., Mrs. Arthur Furman of Imbler and one son, Walter, USN, six grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Brook Galloway of Elgin and one brother, Lewie Burnaugh of Portland. LOUIS B. RINEHART. – Mr. Rinehart was born in Illinois in 1844, and ten years later accompanied his parents across the plains to Oregon. They followed the track s of 1853 from the mouth of the Malheur to Eugene City via Harney Lake. Ten miles west of Eugene the elder Rinehart located a half section of land, and provided a home for his family. Louis remained there until 1862, but that spring came with his brothers to the Grande Ronde valley. Herrin, Oliver – Obituary

A Mystery Solved The latter part of July last, Oliver Herrin, of Summerville, left the ranch of Terry Tuttle for the Blue mountains. Herrin was 24 years old, and at times acted strangely. When he left Tuttle’s he took a horse, blankets and rifle. Friday a hunting party found, nine miles from Summerville, the vest, watch and some of Herrin’s money. Saturday the searchers found his remains nearly consummed by fire. It is supposed the young man shot himself with the gun and fell into a fire of logs prepared by himself. Lois Elise Garity, 96, of La Grande, died Sept. 18 at a local care center. Funeral services will be announced later by Daniels Chapel of the Valley. Lois was born on March 26, 1911, to Joseph and Lilly Zwiefel in Summerville. She was educated at the Pleasant Grove School. She married Chester Michael Garity, who worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. She was involved with the Women’s Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
