DEA. NATHANIEL WHEELER, son of Nathaniel Wheeler, was born in Sutton, Mass., in 1753. He married Mehitabel Haven. He came to Croydon in 1775, and died in 1840, at the age of eighty-seven years. He settled in the wilderness and cleared up what was long known as the ” Wheeler farm” in the southerly part of the town, since occupied by H. Jacobs. He was an extensive and thriving farmer, and a soldier in the Revolutionary war. RUEL DURKEE, son of Rufus and Polly Whipple Durkee, and a descendant of Moses Whipple, Esq., was born in Croydon, July 14, 1807. He has ever resided in his native town. His early years were spent in obtaining an education in the common school, and in assisting to carry on a tannery. Later in life he has carried on extensive farming operations, besides attending to much other business. BENJAMIN and EUNICE (PIERCE) COLE were m. in Cornish Aug. 21, 1788. Their pedigree is unknown. They had the following children, b. in Cornish:     i. AMOS, b. June 26, 1789.     ii. POLLY, b. June 28, 1791.     iii. DANIEL, b. Feb. 8, 1793. The census of 1790 records one boy and one girl beside the parents. The above record fails to mention a dau. that was older.

George Henry Stowell, a wholesale and retail dealer in hardware and one of the wealthiest citizens of Claremont, was born in Cornish, N.H., October 28, 1835. His father, Amasa Stowell, came to Cornish from Hartland, Vt. He died when our subject was a young boy. He had ten children, of whom five are living, namely: Evaline, who married G. W. DAVID STOCKWELL was born in 1748. He came from Sutton, Mass., to Croydon, in 1772. He was a farmer, served honorably in the Revolutionary war, and died July 16, 1824. All by the name of Stockwell, who have originated in Croydon, have descended from him. STILLMAN STOCKWELL, son of Giles, and grandson of David Stockwell, removed to the West, where he has become a wealthy farmer.

Roswell Huntoon, an enterprising farmer residing in Langdon, was born in the town of Unity, this county, October 14, 1820, son of Lemuel and Sybil (Palmer) Huntoon. Phillip Huntoon, born in Wiltshire, England, in 1664, was the immigrant ancestor of this family. The next in line was John. William Hall, the enterprising proprietor of Langdon Creamery, Langdon, N.H., and dealer in butter, cream, milk, eggs, chickens, pork, and other farm and dairy products, was born in Claremont, this State, March 23, 1850. He is a son of Jonathan and Caroline L. (Leet) Hall and a descendant of one of the oldest families in Sullivan County. CAPTAIN MOSES WHIPPLE, son of Jacob, born at Grafton, MA, in 1733, came to Croydon, 1766. His was one of the first three families that came to town. Being well educated, intelligent, distinguished for energy and decision of character, warm-hearted, hospitable and generous to all, he was well calculated to be what he indeed was,-a father to the town. No one in town was ever more trusted or respected.. He filled many important offices, and was chairman of the Committee of Safety during tae Revolutionary struggle.

Baruch Darling was born in Croydon, N. H., January 10, 1799, and came to this town in 1835, and settled upon the farm he now occupies. He married Martha Shaw and reared a family of six children, five of whom are now living, four in this town. Mrs. Darling died September 27, 1882, aged eighty-four years and six months. Of their children, Chester, Alden, Plumy and Sarah, wife of Solomon Goodale, reside in this town.

After spending two years at Middletown College, Ct., and another at Amherst College, Mass., he abandoned his studies on account of ill health, and went West. He was for two years Principal of Marshall Academy, Ill., for seven a Professor of Latin in Union College at Merom, Indiana, and is now Principal of the Academy at Pendleton, Indiana.
