The DuPree family settled nine miles southwest of Hawkinsville, in what later became DuPree’s Militia District of Pulaski County, in the early 1800’s, and some of- their descendants have lived there continually since. John Daniel DuPree is a direct descendant of Jeremiah DuPree, born in 1754, in Brunswick County, Virginia. Early in life Jeremiah moved to Greensville County, Virginia, from which place he volunteered for the Revolution in 1777, and was appointed ensign. The first newspaper published in Hawkinsville was the Pulaski Times, the first edition of which appeared September 9, 1858, with Gen. O. C. Horne and P. E. D. Scarborough as editors and proprietors. This issue gave, in an interesting way, the news of the day, and solicited subscribers, and urged the people to lend their support to this new enterprise. On September 1, 1859, General Horne sold his interest to Col. C. C. Kibbee, and it was then under the management of Scarborough and Kibbee. Among the pioneer settlers of Pulaski County were William Bembry, born in North Carolina, August 23, 1795, and his wife, Marina Mayo Bembry, born in the same state, November 14, 1799, both descendants of English families. They came to Pulaski County in 1829 in covered wagons and purchased lands in and near Old Hartford, a prosperous town of this section at that time. They later built a home about a mile out, on what is now the Cochran highway, then little more than an Indian trail between the Ocmulgee and Oconee Rivers. Wesley Chapel was organized more than one hundred years ago (no record of exact date available). It is situated near the line of Pulaski and Dooly Counties. The first building was of logs, cut and hewn out by those and others who organized and constituted the first church. A number of years ago the old log building had served its day and generation and had to be torn down to make room for a new building. It also was built of logs. Dr. Nathaniel Polhill Jelks, fourth son of James Oliver Jelks and Mary Polhill, was born July 18, 1845, in Hawkinsville, Pulaski County, Georgia, where he died March 28, 1911. When six years old his family moved to Oglethorpe, Georgia, after two years moving to Hamilton County, Florida, where he received his early education, later studying in Augusta, Georgia.
