Dr. Scarborough is the daughter of Robert Lee and Georgia (Turner) Scarborough, and is a graduate of the Hawkinsville High School. She received her A.B. degree from Bessie Tift College, Forsyth, Georgia, and her M.A. degree from Mercer University, Macon, Georgia. Some time thereafter, this couple married on Mr. Marshal’s plantation, and their second child, born about 1850, was Alice Battle. After attending the Hawkinsville public school, he began business as a drug clerk, and later assisted in organizing and conducting the Brown-Bell Pharmacy. W. E. Finleyson, son of John J. Finleyson, who was born January 29, 1829, in Bibb County Georgia, served in the War Between the States one year. Robert Gallatin Lewis, born January 1, 1858, died June 20, 1892, was the son of John Falton Lewis, and his wife, Lavinia Butts, of Dooly County, now Crisp County. He was born at Gum Creek, now Coney, and as a youth attended private schools in Gum Creek and Montezuma. Later he was a student at Mercer University, where he was especially interested in mathematics. John Wilson, born August 1, 1843, and Robert Johnson, born March 6, 1852, were sons of William (born April 13, 1813, died May 8, 1903) and Pherbia Wilson Lancaster (born March 9, 1821, died April 16, 1900), and grandsons of Washington and Nancy Johnson Lancaster, who came here from Burke County and built a nice home near what is now Bembry’s Mill. Nancy, daughter of William and Marina Mayo Bembry, born April 17, 1829, was married to William I. Beaty of Lowndes County, March 12, 1856. William I. Beaty was killed in the Battle of Atlanta, July 22, 1864. Nancy, who survived her husband only a few years, was left with three small children: Josephine, Brown, and W. Judge Henry Hodges Whitfield was born April 11, 1826, and died January 28, 1886. The Whitfields from whom the subject of this sketch is descended came originally from Lancashire, England. Matthew Philips, son of Exum Philips, Captain of Militia in the Revolutionary War, from North Carolina, was born and died in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. Soon after his death in 1823 his wife, Elizabeth Nicholson Philips, daughter of Colonel John Nicholson and Penelope Mann of North Carolina, moved with her three children to Pulaski County, where other members of the Philips family had already preceded her.
