M’Quowen, Alexander – Obituary

Alexander McQuowen,77, died yesterday at St. Elizabeth Hospital after a life-time lived in Oregon. He farmed on a ranch six miles north of Baker. Mr. McQuowen was born October 5, 1865, at Pocahontas. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors are two nephews, Eugene Hammond of Haines and Oral McQuowen of Baker; three nieces, Mrs. John Ingram of Philomath, Mrs. James Ashwood of Haines and Mrs. Nettie Mead of La Grande. Baker City, Oregon Julia M. Fosnot, 90, a lifelong Baker City resident, died Nov. 21, 2000, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center. Her funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Coles-Strommer Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert C. Irwin of St. Francis de Sales Cathedral officiating. S.B. McCORD. – Syrenous Burnett McCord, one of the leading hardware merchants of Eastern Oregon, was born in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, in 1842. He went with his parents to Wisconsin when a youth, and lived there several years. At the age of eighteen he entered into an apprenticeship in a blacksmith shop in the city of Black Jack, his boss being the Honorable George W. Arrival of Early Pioneers to Baker County Oregon

Early in June 1862, traveling parties from California and Nevada began to arrive at the mines on Powder River. These parties had started for the Salmon River mines, and were surprised when they found a mining camp in Eastern Oregon. Amongst those who came across the country from those states were Hardin Estes, Fred Dill, John P. Bowen and perhaps others who have remained here ever since. Pocahontas, Baker County, Oregon Pioneers of the county gathered at the blgr (????) of Jacob McEwen, of Pocahontas this morning, the old resident having passed to the great beyond yesterday morning at 10 o’clock. Rachel C. Buchanan Manners, 85, of Ontario, a former Baker City resident, died Nov. 9, 2000, at Ontario. Her graveside funeral was Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery. Pastor Roger Scovil of the Baker City Christian Church officiated. Mrs. Manners was born and raised in the Wingville and Pocahontas areas where she met and married James Crimin.
